Indiana's Epic Big Ten Title Win Over Ohio State! Hoosiers Claim First Outright Crown Since 1945 (2026)

From Underdogs to Unstoppable: Indiana's Historic Rise!

When Curt Cignetti took the reins at Indiana, he declared a new era. Forget moral victories; he was there to win, and win big. And in a stunning 737 days, he transformed a program known for losing into a national powerhouse, earning the No. 1 seed in the playoffs and clinching their first Big Ten title since 1967!

"I think we were a year late," Cignetti quipped, perfectly capturing the lightning-fast turnaround after their 13-10 victory over No. 1 Ohio State.

This rapid ascent is likely to inspire programs across the nation. Cignetti inherited a team struggling with three consecutive losing seasons, and he boldly challenged anyone who doubted him to look at his track record. The former Nick Saban assistant delivered immediately, achieving a school-record 11 wins and leading the Hoosiers to their first playoff appearance in his debut year.

But here's where it gets controversial... Many thought replicating that success would be impossible. However, the 2025 season has been even more remarkable. With a perfect 13-0 record, the Hoosiers are the last undefeated team in major college football and boast their first outright championship since 1945.

By defeating the Buckeyes (12-1) in Indianapolis, they ended the nation’s longest active winning streak at 16 games, as well as the Big Ten’s longest winning streak in the series. Their victory over then-No. 3 Oregon (11-1) in October also marked the end of the nation’s longest active regular season and home winning streaks.

Adding to their triumphs, they shed the label of the FBS's losingest program, happily passing it on to Northwestern. They also secured their first win against Ohio State since 1988, breaking a 30-year losing streak and claiming their first conference crown in over half a century.

But the accolades don't stop there! Cignetti earned his second consecutive Big Ten Coach of the Year Award. Furthermore, Fernando Mendoza became the first Hoosier to be named the Big Ten’s top quarterback since 2001, and he is poised to become the first Indiana player to win the Heisman Trophy. Mendoza's performance included a perfectly placed 17-yard TD pass to Elijah Sarratt and a crucial 33-yard pass to Charlie Becker, all while playing through an injury sustained on the game's first play.

“Although I got hit, I never was going to stay down,” Mendoza declared, showing his dedication.

Cignetti's bold approach paid off, as he stated, “I wasn’t going to play not to lose.”

And this is the part most people miss... How good have Indiana been during his two-year tenure? They are now 24-2, with their only losses coming against Ohio State and Notre Dame last season, the teams that played in the national championship game. Cignetti and his players have used those experiences to fuel their mission this season, leading to two contract extensions for Cignetti.

Indiana enters the playoffs with both offense and defense ranked in the top five in scoring, showcasing their ability to outplay opponents.

Now, a new chapter begins for Cignetti and a school known for its success in men's basketball, men's soccer, and swimming and diving. Football has never been this close to the top. These Hoosiers believe they can continue their remarkable journey.

"It means a lot, we played for each other,” linebacker Isaiah Jones said of winning the championship. “For any of the doubters out there, this was the final nail in the coffin.”
