Hockey Legends Bid Farewell to Matthews Arena
The iconic Matthews Arena, a historic hockey venue in Boston, witnessed a star-studded gathering of legendary coaches and players as it prepares for its final days. Among the attendees were hockey royalty, including Jerry York, the most successful coach in college hockey history, and Jack Parker, a fellow Hockey Hall of Famer and longtime rival of York's at Boston University.
The event also featured Ben Smith, who led the US women's team to Olympic gold in 1998, Joe Bertagna, a former commissioner of the ECAC and Hockey East, and Marty Pierce, a former Boston Fire commissioner and coach of Matignon High, known for his impressive 10-title run.
One of the highlights was the presence of Bill Cleary, a former Harvard coach and two-time Olympic medalist with the US men's team. The 91-year-old Cleary, known for his quick wit, entertained the crowd with his signature fake handshake.
Ted Donato, who surpassed Cleary as Harvard's most successful coach, played a clever trick by avoiding Cleary's handshake, showcasing his competitive spirit.
Ben Smith, referencing Robert Redford's character in 'The Natural,' described Cleary as 'Roy Hobbs,' a legendary player who could captivate fans and inspire awe.
Former Bruin Mike Milbury, Bruce Crowder, and several other notable coaches and players were also in attendance. Some chose to reminisce and walk around the arena one last time, while a few took the opportunity for a final skate.
Smith, despite being close to 80, showcased his agility on the ice, donning vintage Olympic skate guards and handling the puck with ease. This was his first time skating at the arena since stepping down as Northeastern's coach in 1996.
Northeastern women's coach Dave Flint, a two-time national coach of the year, joined Smith on the ice. Former BU women's coach Brian Durocher and several other successful coaches were also present.
Dick Umile, a renowned coach with New Hampshire, and Bertagna, wearing a Harvard sweater from his playing days, skated alongside Bill O'Neill, a former Salem State coach and BU defenseman.
The event concluded with a memorable skating session, followed by a group photo near the home bench. Madigan, the event organizer, shared insights about the arena's future, with plans for a 310,000-square-foot complex.
The gathering was a testament to the arena's impact on New England college hockey, with Madigan emphasizing the importance of the people behind the success, not just the building itself.
As the crowd bid farewell, they expressed their gratitude for the arena's joy and memories, leaving a lasting impact on the hockey community.
