Australia's Cheapest EV Ute: Musso EV Test Drive & Review (2026)

Australia's Electric Utes: A Revolutionary Take on a Classic?

When I first got my hands on Australia's first affordable fully electric ute, I was both excited and nervous. After all, I've been driving a trusty 2014 Volkswagen Polo for the past four years, and before that, a Holden Astra that was older than me! But this new experience was a far cry from my previous vehicles.

As I navigated the winding roads, I couldn't help but recall the uneasiness I felt when I first learned to drive. Australia's love affair with huge utes and SUVs is well-documented, and it's no wonder. Large cars dominated the list of the top 10 most-purchased vehicles last year, and demand is growing, despite safety and environmental concerns.

But electric car sales have been on the rise, accounting for 9.7% of new cars sold in the three months to September, according to the Australian Automobile Association (AAA). So, what does this mean for the future of utes in Australia?

Enter the Musso EV, the first electric ute by the South Korean brand KGM. It's a game-changer, offering a unique blend of 'refined styling' and 'rugged practicality'. But is it enough to convert gas-guzzling ute and SUV drivers, or newcomers like me? And with road fatalities rising, are electric utes the answer?

I put the Musso EV to the test, driving it through the streets of Sydney. Despite some initial challenges, I found it to be a capable and stylish vehicle. But the real question remains: are electric utes the answer to Australia's road safety concerns?

The Musso EV's price point is competitive, starting at $60,000 for the two-wheel drive model, which is less than its fully electric competitors. Hussein Dia, a professor of future urban mobility at Swinburne University, calls it the 'first genuinely affordable' electric ute in Australia. It drives a long way on a single charge and comes with features normally seen only in 'fancy SUVs'.

However, Dia also notes that people who use their utes for tough jobs might find it lacking in heavy-duty capabilities. KGM, the manufacturer, describes the vehicle as 'purpose-built for lifestyle', and Stevan Dimitrovski, the Australian national marketing manager, suggests it's more about 'throwing bikes and golf clubs in the back' than towing boats and caravans.

Nathan Moore, a behavioural scientist at the University of Technology Sydney, agrees that SUV and ute drivers typically buy them for work or a 'rugged' lifestyle. He believes that these groups might not see EVs as capable or rugged enough.

Despite these challenges, the Musso EV is making waves in the market. It's appealing to 'mainstream buyers rather than early adopters', according to Dia. But with public charging stations still a challenge, especially in rural areas, the Musso EV's range and charging infrastructure are concerns for potential buyers.

In a Bunnings car park on a sunny summer morning, I surveyed ute drivers' opinions. Some were intrigued by the idea of electric utes but were hesitant to make the switch. Others were worried about the range and access to charging stations.

The ultimate question remains: are electric utes the answer to Australia's road safety concerns? The market is evolving, and the future of utes is uncertain. But one thing is clear: the electric vehicle manufacturing game is different, and it's time for Australia to embrace the change.
